SBA Tops ECS in Battle of the Eagles Thriller

CORDOVA, TN (August 16, 2021) – In front of a raucous home crowd, the St. Benedict volleyball team posted a thrilling 3-1 win over ECS in the season opener for both schools.

Lauren Carter led the way with 12 kills and 10 digs. Jordan Simpson racked up seven service aces to go along with five kills. Setter Cara Crunk totaled 35 assists and 15 digs. All three Eagles were named Commercial Appeal Prep Top Performers.

SBA was slow to start and trailed the first set 12-2. After a timeout to reset the tone, the Eagles began to chip away at the lead and eventually pulled to within 23-20. ECS committed a service error and opened the door for a 5-0 SBA run that closed the set.

ECS took a back and forth second set 25-22 to even the score at 1-1. The home Eagles bounced back in the third and posted a 25-23 win to retake the lead, 2-1.

In the fourth, SBA again trailed most of the way, falling behind 14-11 and 19-17. However, the last six points of the set all went SBA's way en route to a 25-19 fourth-set, match-clinching victory.

The JV Eagles also posted a win Monday, beating ECS 2-0.

The Eagles are back at home on Thursday, August 19 hosting Hutchison. The freshman match is slated to start at 4:30, followed by JV at 5:30 and Varsity at 6:30.
