SBA Boys Fall to Briarcrest

(CORDOVA, TN - February 18, 2022) - The SBA boys' basketball team met Briarcrest (19-9, 2-4) in a pivotal region game at The Nest on Friday night. Both teams needed a win to advance to postseason play.

The game was closely contested throughout and both teams showed some nerves early on. Neither team could put together an extended run in the first half. The score was tied at 15 after one quarter and the Saints held a 26-23 advantage at the half.

The second half was also back-and-forth, but Briarcrest took advantage of the Eagles' shooting struggles in the third quarter and went on a run that proved to be the difference.

Jaye Nash was the Saints' most reliable scoring option all night and his 24 points were a game high. Wes Davis (11 pts) was a presence inside.

Freshman Damion Cox led SBA with 19 points, Zander Schmidt (9 pts) hit a few key shots in the first half, and Marcus Gray (14 pts) had a strong fourth quarter, punctuated by a fastbreak dunk that briefly gave the Eagles some momentum.

But the late run came up short and Briarcrest advanced to the postseason with a 59-51 victory. Despite the late season push, the boys ended their season with an 8-15 record, 1-5 in the region.

The 2022 senior class was honored before the game, including Gary Bair, Seamas Carrasco, Josh Neely, Joseph DiGaetano, Zander Schmidt, Nathan Hunt, and Pierce Petroff.
