Eagles Earn First Win of Season Against Westwood

(CORDOVA, TN - September 1, 2023) - The Eagle football team welcomed Westwood to The Nest on a beautiful Friday night for football this past week.

The Longhorns came out of the gate hot, scoring 18 points in the first quarter to grab control of the game. Westwood quarterback Jordan Irvin threw three of his four touchdowns in the quarter, including two to Malik Jones. Darien Bell's five yard touchdown in the first quarter served as the lone Eagle points in the first half as Westwood entered the locker room up 18-7.

When Irvin and Jones connected again on a 36-yard score in the third quarter, it looked like the Eagles would have to wait a little longer to secure their first win of the season. But then the defense locked down the Longhorn offense for the duration of the game and the offense began to get a push in the run game. Tony Gerard and Devin Mason each scored touchdowns to cut the lead to 24-22 before Mason forced Irvin to fumble on the goal line and the Eagle defense recovered the ball in the endzone.

From there Seth Dennie, who ran for 234 yards on the day, ripped off a few runs in a row, including a 50-yarder before capping off the drive with a two-yard score to put the Eagles on top 30-24 with just a minute remaining. Adam O'Brien's interception of Irvin sealed the game, giving the team their first win of the season.

They'll look to make it two in a row at Tipton-Rosemark on Friday night.
